CIA Headquarters, Operations Center 3 Langley, Virginia

“I’ve got something.” Child pointed toward the main displays as his other hand worked his keyboard. Camera footage appeared that rapidly fast-forwarded, tracking a black SUV. It disappeared inside a large building with a helipad on the top, a chopper square in the middle, its rotors still. The footage continued to race forward and a group of people appeared boarding the chopper.

“When did this happen?”

“Almost half an hour ago.” Child opened up several more windows on the display showing close-ups of the group as the footage continued to race forward.

Tong squinted then took over control of the additional displays, initiating facial recognition. “The woman in the evening gown is definitely Professor Palmer,” she said without waiting for the computer’s confirmation.

Leroux agreed. “The one that’s being carried over that guy’s shoulder has to be Professor Acton.”

“Dead or unconscious?”

Leroux shook his head. “I’m not seeing any movement, though that doesn’t mean anything.” He watched as the rotors spun up and the helicopter lifted off. His eyes narrowed. “How long did they sit there?”

“Three and a half minutes,” replied Child.

Tong turned in her chair to face Leroux. “Why would they just sit there?”

“Because everything’s timed to the minute, if not the second.” He turned to Child. “Where did they go?”

Child skipped the footage ahead. “Vöslau Airfield. It’s just south of the city, mostly used for private charters.”

“Exactly as Reading suspected. Do we have footage?”

Child indicated the screen with a thrust of his chin. Leroux faced the displays and breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of everyone, including an alive and well Professor Acton, boarding a private jet.

“Well, at least we know he’s alive,” said Tong. “How long ago was that?”

“Five minutes.”

Leroux stared at the image. “Is that plane in the air?”

Child nodded. “It took off almost immediately.”

“Timed to the second. Flight plan?”

Child’s fingers flew over the keyboard. “Athens.”

“Well, we know that’s not where they’re probably actually headed. Let’s get this info to Reading. Put together an executive summary for me. I’ll send it to the Chief and he can push it up the line to see how involved they want to get. If these people are holding twenty-plus billion dollars, they might want to get boots on the ground for when this thing lands.”

“Yes, sir,” replied Child.

Leroux turned to Tong. “See if we can get IDs on those faces. And find out what assets we have in the area that we could send into what I’m guessing is going to be North Africa.”

“Yes, sir.” Tong passed off the assignments to members of the team as Leroux stared at a map showing the flight data for the private jet while it banked south following its filed flight plan. For the moment.

“I’ve got something,” called Therrien from the back.

“What?”

“One of our taps in the Caymans picked up a deposit into one of the accounts originating from Meitner’s. A little under one million.”

“Is it still there?”

“No, it was immediately split into what appear to be four random amounts, all sent to various banks in the Middle East and Asia.
